Fabrication is the part of a countertop project that customers never see and pay a large share of the invoice for. Between a slab standing in a yard and a finished top going into a kitchen there are eight or nine distinct operations, each with its own machine, its own consumables and its own opportunity to ruin the piece.
The Sequence Inside the Shop
Layout against the template, cutting to size, cutting apertures, machining the edge profile, polishing, any mitre or build up work, dry assembly to check the fit, and finally cleaning and packing for transport. A kitchen moves through all of that in a day or two of actual work, spread across a queue of several weeks.
Where the Risk Concentrates
Apertures and mitres. Everything else is recoverable in some way. A cutout taken out at the wrong dimension or a mitre cut at the wrong angle consumes the piece and often the slab, which is why shops are careful about receiving the actual fixtures rather than working from a datasheet.
Yield Is Half the Quote
Stone is bought by the slab and sold by the fitted area, so the offcut is a real cost the shop absorbs. A layout that leaves a usable remnant is a much better commercial outcome than one that leaves scrap, and this is why layout is done by an experienced person rather than by software alone.

Receiving and Inspection
A slab is checked on arrival for cracks, for the block and bundle reference matching the order, and for colour against the piece the customer selected. Problems found here are the suppliers. Problems found after cutting are the shops. That asymmetry is why the inspection is taken seriously.
Layout
The template is overlaid on a digital image of the actual slab and the pieces are positioned. This decides where veining falls, whether a feature runs across a join, and how much material is left over. It is the single most consequential half hour in the whole process and it is where an experienced fabricator earns their premium.
Cutting
A bridge saw or a waterjet takes the pieces out. Water is continuous, for cooling the blade and for suppressing the dust, which is a serious health matter with engineered materials in particular. Cuts are made oversize on any edge that will be worked later, because machining removes material.
Apertures and Edges
Sink and hob openings are cut and their internal corners are radiused rather than left square, because a sharp internal corner is a crack waiting to start. Edge profiles are machined with shaped tooling in several passes, then the exposed faces are polished through a sequence of increasingly fine abrasives.
Dry Assembly
The pieces are laid out on a bench in the shop exactly as they will meet in the kitchen, and the seams are checked and adjusted. Finding a discrepancy here costs an hour. Finding it in a customers kitchen costs a day and a second visit, which is why any shop worth using does this step.
Packing and Transport
Finished pieces travel vertically in a frame, edge protected, because a slab carried flat will crack under its own weight over a bump. Most transit damage happens in loading and unloading rather than on the road, and it is one of the reasons a fabricator prefers to deliver with their own crew.
Remnants and When They Are Worth It

What a Remnant Actually Is
The part of a slab left after a kitchen has been cut from it. Shops accumulate them, they occupy space, and they are sold at a substantial discount because the alternative is disposal. The material is identical to the full slab it came from; the only difference is the size and shape available.
The Jobs They Suit
Bathroom vanity tops, a small utility run, a windowsill, a hearth, a bar top or a single island in a compact kitchen. Anything under roughly a metre and a half in one piece is a realistic candidate. This is also the sensible way to get an expensive material into a small space at a price that makes sense.
Where They Do Not Work
A full kitchen assembled from remnants means joins in arbitrary places and colour drift between pieces from different blocks. It looks exactly like what it is. The saving is real and the result is usually regretted, which is why fabricators steer people away from it rather than toward it.
Check the Piece Before Committing
Look at the whole face in good light for cracks, resin fills and edge damage, because a remnant has been handled and stored rather than kept in a bundle. Confirm the usable dimensions rather than the overall ones, since an irregular edge from the original cut may not be squarable to what you need.
Fabrication Is Still Fabrication
The discount is on material only. Cutting, edging, polishing and fitting cost what they always cost, and on a small piece those fixed costs dominate. A remnant vanity top is cheaper than a full slab vanity top but it is not cheap, and expecting otherwise leads to a disappointing quote.
Ask Your Own Fabricator First
If you have already had a kitchen cut, the offcut from your own slab is sitting in their yard and it matches your kitchen exactly. Buying it back for a utility room or a bathroom is the one case where a remnant gives a better result than a new slab, because the match is perfect by definition.

Datasheets Are Not Reliable
Published cutout dimensions are frequently generic across a product family, and manufacturing tolerance on a pressed steel sink is wider than the tolerance a fabricator is working to. Shops ask for the physical fixture because measuring it removes an entire class of error that would only be discovered at installation.
Undermount Costs More for a Reason
On a top mount the sink rim covers the cut edge, so the aperture only has to be roughly right. On an undermount the cut edge is visible, so it has to be accurate, smooth and polished all the way round. That is a separate machining and polishing operation on an internal curve, which is slower than any external edge.
The Reveal Is a Choice
Positive reveal leaves a little of the sink rim visible, zero reveal aligns the stone edge with the bowl, and negative reveal sets the stone slightly inside the bowl. Zero reveal looks the cleanest and is the least forgiving of any error. Decide it deliberately, because the shop will otherwise pick a default.
Radiused Internal Corners
Every internal corner of an aperture is cut with a radius rather than a point. A square internal corner concentrates stress and is the origin of most cracks that appear across a worktop months after installation. A radius of a few millimetres removes that, and it is invisible once a sink or hob sits over it.
Hobs Need Clearance and Ventilation
Induction and gas units both specify a gap around the aperture and, for many models, a ventilation route. A cutout made to the exact appliance footprint with no allowance traps heat against the stone and against the cabinet. This is in the appliance instructions and it is routinely missed.
Support Under the Sink
A cast iron or fireclay sink hanging from an undermount fixing is a substantial load carried by adhesive and a few clips. Heavy sinks need a supporting frame or a cradle in the cabinet below, fitted before the top goes on. Establish who is supplying that, because it falls between two trades.
